Aikido is a Japanese self-defence martial art that brings together throwing, joint locking, striking and pinning techniques. We also practice with traditional Japanese weapons such as the sword, staff and knife and learn techniques to protect yourself from these weapons whilst unarmed.
Founded in the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido is based on a range of ancient disciplines including judo and jiu jitsu.
The name Aikido comes from three Japanese words:
Ai – meaning harmony
Ki – meaning spirit or energy
Do – meaning the path, or the way.
However, Aikido is more than simply a method of self-defence. Its name shows the wider benefits of Aikido practice which has been shown to have a positive impact on both physical and mental wellbeing.
Aikido is suitable for everyone, as the principles rely on correct execution of the technique rather than brute strength. It helps to develop a greater understanding of harmony, balance and the dynamics of movement.
